DEC TEST DRIVE MEME

Welcome to the Undying Court Test Drive Meme! This post will allow players to test drive their AU characters in the setting, as well as meet fresh faces or even connect with those they have preexisting CR with. As with anything involved in the setting, this post will likely contain: violence, enthrallment, torture, and sexual content.

Regarding continuity, all TDM threads can be taken as in-game canon if desired. Please keep in mind that the game proper will begin in mid December, in the Winter Season, so Students/Novices should create their prompts under the assumption that the TDM takes place during the season prior to the one they will be apping as. This means that students planning to app as first season novices will be visiting Castle Courtsheart prior to their Beginning. In other words, if you plan to app a student as a second season, the TDM will take place during their first, and so on.

NEW ARRIVALS

New arrivals will be starting their first season in the winter, but they're welcomed to the castle early, under the watchful eyes of the Silver Court. Upon arrival, they will be shown to a room by a human whose eyes glow softly from within, with vacant smiles. Thralls. There, the human thralls will draw them a bath and bring them new clothes to wear to their first meeting. These are rich, expensive things made of high quality fabric. Whether it's a silk dress and a heavy velvet cowl, or a fine pants and a vest made from a brocade, the servants will provide. The new initiate's old clothes will be burned after, in a symbol of the life they are leaving behind. If they are hungry, they will be provided food. If they need anything at all, they need only ask their new servants.

Later that night they are taken to a grand hall, with high arched ceilings and candles burning in chandeliers. There are figures painted overhead, beautiful and entwined. Some have their eyes are colored to match the courts, others are gracefully placed in their death, with blood dripping from necks and wrists.

Balconies line the hall behind a forest of pillars, and vampires all watch as the group walk through (some more hungrily than others).

"Welcome to your first undying season, initiates," a pale, silver-haired vampire calls. They have silver eyes are clad in silver robes, but command the attention of everyone in attendance. They have a beauty that seems neither male nor female. They are standing at the center of a wide semi-circle of other vampires, "As the Silver Court's acting voice at this end of the Autumn season, allow me to introduce you to the Houses that will be your new homes."

The vampire, Revar, gives the newcomers an overview of all of the courts—Blue, Red, Gold, Silver, and Black—and then invites those already claimed by their Courts to join the vampires who will be their Makers.

Revar offers the Foundlings who are left a gentle, knowing smile, and then allows them to be chosen. They are like the last sheep left at the auction, and the vampires who take them may not be the enthused about it. Nevertheless, Revar waits patiently until all have found a maker.

Now that they are paired up it is expected—indeed, required—that the initiate drink from their maker. That is their Beginning. Only once they have truly begun can they can be considered novices.

AUTUMN NOX

Silver Court is in season and for the Autumn Nox it holds a large symposium, inviting all the best vampire minds from around lands nearby and far. The whole castle is abuzz with new activity. The stables are packed full of horses, carriages litter the grounds, but somehow the castle has enough rooms to house all the new arrivals.

Novices will find that some of these vampires have not seen a human-novice in a very, very long time. These vampires might see the human-novices more like specimens, curious about their every move. They won't bite, but novices may find themselves observed as they wander the castle and its grounds.

The symposium itself is open to anyone at the castle. Scholars can present on any topic at all. Novices will find that these range from the incredibly mundane (you've always wanted to attend a history of bottom-feeding river fish, haven't you?) to the truly fascinating (new insights into how vampire hearts work) to the downright strange (the symposium has a range of lectures very close to dawn about the sharing of vampire...fluids). Seasoned novices with their own Autumn classes to attend are expected to keep up with their studies, but some teachers may let them out of a session to attend the lectures and workshops of the symposium.

The Silver Court vampires are incredibly busy between running the symposium and trying to help the new novices get settled in. They may need some volunteers to lend a hand with setting up rooms or helping scholars find their way around. In fact, volunteers might find themselves leading scholars down to the second kitchen for a bite to eat, a strong reminder that even these demure learners are still monsters who must drink blood.

PUMPKINS-GONE-WILD

The symposium isn't all that the autumn season brings. The Silver Court’s talents are on display in other ways—sometimes not in ways another had particularly hoped. An overly zealous youngblood in the Silver Court tried to grow a few extra pumpkins for the occasion and ended up with a few too many! The pumpkin vines break out of the green house and start sprouting pumpkins everywhere. These are no ordinary pumpkins, they will sprout and grow and become fully formed in the course of a night. Better keep an eye out for those vines or else your room might become full of pumpkins! Luckily, the pumpkins aren’t rotting any time soon (they’ll last until winter, or so the Silver Court vampires are saying), but it can be pretty inconvenient for them to grow everywhere. Start cutting those vines to pieces, and hope they don’t try to entangle you in the process.

LIBRARY CLEAN-UP

Meanwhile, with all the scholars in town are making a mess of the library, much to the Silver Court vampire’s dismay. Books are being checked out and not checked back in, passed around from scholar to scholar. You might find those lost books just about anywhere. Who was reading in a tree? Anyone who collects the books and returns them to the library is sure to get a little bit of favor with the librarians, and it’s never a bad thing to have a bit of an in with a Court. If you’re worried about failing Silver Court, it’s time to get searching! Although how you’re going to convince a 300 year old vampire that time is not fake and that deadlines are real (and in fact were two days ago) is anyone’s guess.

UNETHICAL EXPRIMENTS

[CW: Torture, experiments]

Those who venture towards the basement might hear something a little different than normal. The thralls who spend their time down there are normally quiet, commanded to keep silent and pleasant for the vampires they serve. But with the arrival of the new scholars comes disquieting, inhuman screams from the darker reaches of the basement. Novices trying to catch a glimpse will be chased away, but teachers might be invited to watch as these vampires experiment on one another, all in the name of science. What’s a little torture, when you’re undying?

[If she'd been a little bit braver, could she have just set out on her own. made her own life? Maybe. But after a moment she shrugs.]

Well... before the whole feather thing, anyway. Now it's really too late.

[ the ritual, indeed. tighnari isn't one for lavish ceremonies, but the blood claim must still be made, in order for tighnari to take his place as mayoi's maker. turning from the window, he gestures for the young man to follow, though he soon chuckles low in his throat. ]

Well, I won't require you to travel to hell, my suite will more than suffice.

[ which is exactly where tighnari leads him. to his private chambers. it's a suite, at least, not intimate in the way that taking someone to the bedroom might be. there's a comfortable little common room first, where a fire crackles low in the hearth, surrounded by comfortable looking armchairs and a squashy sofa. tighnari shuts the door, but very pointedly does not lock it, perhaps for his new novice's sense of safety.

as for the room.. it's quite cozy. the walls are crammed with bookshelves, and where there are no books or scrolls, there are plants, plants of all kinds tucked into nooks and sat upon the stone windowsill, their long tendrils trailing, broad leaves turned toward the night sky. ]

We can proceed when you're ready.

[She echoes the nod, because that is good advice. Now is the time to learn what she can. Knowledge and skills are going to be the best way to give her existence some value, to improve her chances of surviving.]

True, wouldn't want to put all the eggs in one basket.

[Having even the beginnings of a way forward has calmed down the fear and pessimism that had been gripping her.]

Either way, thank you. I was feeling pretty lost, but I think I feel better now.

Only if I can have yours as well. I'm Alice.

[Good. It looks like he's feeling better.]

And I think we'll be okay. They wouldn't go through all the trouble and expense of bringing us here and dressing us up if they weren't going to at least give us a chance.

[She is saying that with a confidence that she definitely doesn't feel, but she wants to keep his spirits up.]

45 years? That's such a long time...

[Not just the years working here, because adding that to how old he appears to be... just based on the math he has to be close to a hundred years old!

It makes sense of course. Vampires stop aging once they're turned. She knows that. Intellectually. But the idea of a such a long lifespan is something she hasn't really thought about yet.

Well, time to avoid examining her feelings about that by changing the subject.]

Um, I do have some interest in the healing arts myself, so maybe I'll wind up in one of your classes someday.

Crying wouldn't do me any good. In fact, I'm willing to bet showing that kind of weakness is more likely to make me look like a steak.

[At this point she's being argumentative on principle alone.

But let's see, what does she want in a room....?]

Hmm, is it hard to get a room with windows?

Aw, for once you sell yourself short. Take that egotism all the way.

[Fine, he did the harder of the jobs. She poured the glasses generously and put everything else to the wayside.

About time, this is when…for once…she actually felt like a normal person. No one judged her for her tastes. No one judged her outloud.

She could be someone else, someone who felt like was the true her.

Weird. How that was.]

How do you want to do this today? I think, judging by your state, you’re in a dramatic reading mood.

Hmm, when I was a kid I always really loved Country Gardens.

[It was light and cheerful and something Lorina played to cheer her up. Same as their mother did before.]

Took me forever to learn how to play it myself though.

[ Those other vampires are idiots. Imagine being a ruthless killer, and maintaining a kind heart? Tighnari's done the impossible, as far as Ed's concerned.

So of course the answer doesn't surprise him. Molding the minds of his students, and Ed has no doubt Tightnari's intentions are entirely wholesome. Ed huffs into his wine glass, resentful that he can't bring himself to feel the same. ]

The ones that aren't sucked dry before their third season, you mean. I don't even keep track of the first season's names anymore. Like, what's the point?

[ Ed's hand is cold on Izzy's warm neck; he's greedy for that warmth, impatient to steal it with his teeth. He can feel the shift in Izzy's posture, in his thoughts, and knows he's just as frightened as Edward impelled him to be. ]

Respect. Exactly. [ He hisses by Izzy's ear as he continues to steer him by the neck around the turn in the hallway, up to the door of Ed's suite. ] Hold fast to that respect, hm? I'll handle the rest.

[ As rattled by fear as Izzy is, he isn't afraid of Edward, though he should be, for all Ed's done and could do still to him. Even threatened, Izzy only moves closer, becomes more stalwart in his loyalty. He's a marvel among humans, soon to be a marvel among vampires, and Edward can only hope that side of Izzy isn't transformed with the rest of him. That and enjoy himself by exploiting Izzy's human weaknesses while he still can. ]

Only if they can be, like, fancy werewolves, instead of the disheveled, mangy kind.

There's no reason to whisper in Ed's private office, except that it's fun, and that's exactly a reason to whisper and act all sneaky about this. Ed nods and hums his agreement conspiratorially as he considers the plethora of options Satoru provides. He scratches his knuckles through his scruffy beard as he thinks: which of those options will have the least consequences for everyone else involved, so they aren't inadvertently pissing off people they don't want the attention of?

Ed offers back slowly, still in a whisper, as he considers it, "What if we do the wedgie thing, or something like it, masked as some other unfortunate visiting scholars? Add a bit of depth to the trick."

[ Ah, the smell of mental wheels grinding. That's a good sign. For all of Blue Court's antics, Edward prefers the kind of students who think for themselves. Keeps things interesting. Also, generally, helps keep them alive through a full year. ]

It's just Edward. Edward Teach. Mister Teacher Sir was my dad.

[ Have to get the dad jokes out of the way. Plus it's fun to watch the bait wriggle a bit before it's cast to the depths. He isn't left waiting long, though. Edward gestures in the direction of the trap. ]

Would've been a B if you'd picked a more deliberate hallway. Those other novices are allies in your war, not targets, and they'll be through this door just as readily as any vampire. Now, if you wanted the highest possible marks... Well, there's more than one way to target a vampire that doesn't affect humans. Lots to exploit there, if you take the time to plan it right.

Lucky you found a friendly teacher so soon after your arrival, instead of the other kind.

[ Look at this fanged smile. The epitome of trustworthy, this guy. ]

Shit at introductions, though. I'm Edward Teach, Blue Court instructor, notorious for being easy, grade-wise... mostly. What's your name, lad?

I am Mayoi, but I will answer to most anything.

[She has a good point, and having such a logical explanation does a lot to settle him down. He relaxes just the tiniest bit more.]

You have a good point. They …have gone through great lengths to dress us up like elaborate dolls. I can tell the clothing is very fine… more expensive than anything I have ever seen. It would be a shame to then throw it out…

[Oh, his suite… how curious. Though he nods quietly and follows after him like a little shadow, he does not try to school the curiosity on his face as they enter. He has been exploring the castle himself in his free time, but this is the first time he’s seen inside one of the teacher’s living quarters. How cozy… He makes a note to ask him about the plants later.]

[Ah, and he was expecting the click of a lock. He blinks and glances for a second at the door when he realizes it did not come. The smallest actions weigh monumentally on someone who is as hyperaware of his surroundings and full of adrenaline as Mayoi has been.]

[Tighnari continues to handle him with care and Mayoi continues to be more and more in shock that anyone would bother.]

I… I am ready. [Waiting will only make him more anxious]

A-Ah… what. What is the proper form of address for one’s Maker…?

[Reputation, huh?]

I have... heard a few things. But the Red Court's reputation doesn't have anything to worry about from me.

[Which could be either 'I won't do it any harm' or 'I really couldn't make it any worse.'

Alice has also never considered herself particularly artistic but she also hasn't considered herself particularly anything. Guess it's time to start finding herself.]

So... what now? Is there someone we should report to or...?

If you're the friendly one, I'd hate to see the strict ones.

[His smile is wry as he introduces himself in quite a casual tone]

Harlock, Phantom Harlock. Former bandit and general troublemaker.

Exactly!

[Still keeping up that bright smile and veneer of confidence. Privately she's pretty sure they absolutely would dress a bunch of people up for funsies and then eat half of them. But let's not think about that.]

All we really need to worry about is doing well in our studies. And that is something we students can help each other out with.

After I become one? Hm... Probably become a teacher, maybe take on some novices. My maker has been so good to me that I can't help but want to kind of emulate it some.

[He had plenty of other plans for after, but none he was going to tell someone he's just met. Maybe with time she will know.

He takes a big bite of his apple, thinking about it.]

Just gonna take it a step at a time. If I could graduate early from here, I would, but patience is key and all that. How about you? Any plans other than helping your grandma?

I mean...mostly yeah. [but only mostly. He can be terrified to the very core of him but there is only one person he will respect wholly. For now. So long as he keeps being more, so long as he keeps being the best, so long as he keeps being...Edward.]

[Oh, so she played like that, not surprising. Predictable even but quickly shields that thought best he can because she's probably not going to appreciate that if she catches it. Still, the bite of her nails was curious, something he definitely was interested in. He makes something of a face at licking her boots literally clean, but then tilts his head in something of a shrug, clearly not put off enough to reject the idea.

Oo, and then he grip tightens and he raises an eyebrow. Still very interested.]

Oh, I don't mind any of that, some of it is more appealing than other parts, but if you bleed me too much, my maker might take up with that.

[The fact that the walls aren't broken is a good thing, because maybe he wants to surprise Xenk with his goals and plans one day, but until such a time, it will just have to wait. Still, to be called worthy of someone's attention gets a little up kick in his heartbeat. He can't help how being rejected his whole life has lent to him liking to get approval from those he sees as being worthy of his own attention.

Still, the challenge is definitely worthy of his attention. That smirk growing almost.. predatory.]

[ She hums in thought, seriously thinking about it. Long enough to take a bite of the apple, chew slowly, and not yet have a response immediately after she'd swallowed that bit. Really, it was a thought she'd never think to have, if it weren't for one of the teachers constantly talking about the dagger she had. ]

For long term, I'll probably end up being a part of the medical staff and putting things together for that. Maybe even special 'hunts' to find some of the rarer ingredients... Maybe I'll look into finding out about my family that left me in the woods.

[ Yeah, because everyone slips things like that into their plans all the time. It's why she was quick to go for another bite of her apple half. ]

[Jim chuckles before turning the book sideways as if looking for something in it that isn't there for be found. The banter is familiar and he welcomes it.]

Hardly, was hoping this anatomy book might have some nudes in it, but instead I'm on the verge of boring myself into a nap.

[With a "here catch" he tosses the book down to the other man before changing how he sits so he can better look down at Aurinn. Blue eyes catching those golden ones as he smirks.]

Though, I have to admit, the Silver Court has some lookers, so can't say I would be hurting if I did.

[Oh, that was a bit of a bomb out of nowhere. But he can't really say he's opposed to hearing it. Really, she was rather an open book it seems even if she was also at times hard to read. Curious girl.

He taps his chin in thoughts as he chews his apple thoroughly before swallowing.]

Well, maybe by then I can help you find that information. [A favor for a favor perhaps.] I could use always use an in with a medical professional and maybe I can be in a position to help you too. Mutual give and take, you know?
