If you want to be very technical, a tonic is a carbonated water with a splash of quinine. For the layman's purpose, however, both of the words 'potion' and 'tonic' are somewhat interchangeable, describing any draught meant to restore, act as an antidote antidote, or grant specific effects.

The difference comes in tinctures, decoctions, and infusions. These all have similar outcomes, but the preparation and intent are different.
