JANUARY TDM - WINTER DREAMS

Welcome to the Undying Court's January Test Drive Meme! This post also functions as the January Event for existing characters, and continues the Winter Season, led by the Blue Court.

New characters may handwave or backdate the previous season's arrival prompt should they wish to, but you may otherwise assume they've been here the whole time! Additionally, all TDM threads can be taken as in-game canon if desired. And remember that apps open February 3-7, with invites opening on January 28, and reserves not long after!

Note that this post will contain: violence, enthrallment, torture, slavery, horror and potentially sexual content. Dreams come in many forms, after all.

This event also features another chance for characters to submit Regains, so make sure to submit after you've posted your top-level or reply to someone else's dream. For characters both new and old, feel free to brush up on the Premise, Vampire Powers, and head over to the FAQ/Game Info page if you have any questions!

ONCE UPON A DREAM

A quiet falls over the Castle as a new day begins to break. As with every morning, this is a time when vampires must retreat to avoid the rays of the sun, pulling heavy curtains around their beds and windows to block out any light. However, this particular morning is abnormally quiet as the whole of the Castle seems to fall asleep all at once, and all together. After this enchanted sleep, and for the the next thirty days, the Castle's residents will start to experience strange phenomena within their dreams.

During this period, dreams become more vivid, so realistic it feels like the dreamer is awake. Dreamers can pass into each other's dreams without meaning to. Some of these dreams are in fact memories--either those from the lives the characters have lived in the Castle and the outlying lands, or the strange memories they've begun to gain back.

But be careful! For what starts as a regular memory might start to warp into something new. If you're lucky, it'll be something positive, like a dream of a home you've always wanted. But if you're unlucky, the memory might twist and turn into a nightmare, catching you in it and turning your worst fears against you.

Each nightfall, everyone will wake and return to normal. Or at least, most people will.

[Note: Any current characters who participate in the dream event by creating a top level or tagging someone else at least once in this prompt may be rewarded with a free impactful memory, which may be used in the dreamscape. Don't forget to submit for your Regains!]

A NIGHTMARISH CURSE

It turns out that not everyone wakes up. Those who stay in nightmares for too long may find themselves cursed, and unable to wake up. At first, the curse appears no different from regular sleep. But a few hours in the victim will start screaming uncontrollably. No touch will wake them, no amount of calling their name will break the spell. After too long, the victim will start to bleed, slowly at first, and then more and more as they remain afflicted. A victim left unattended will bleed out and die.

The Council works quickly to step in. Kashire (who is looking rather frayed this season) delivers the news that there's no need to panic, but everyone will need to do their part in locating and curing victims. In fact, the youngbloods seem to be taking this as the perfect opportunity for a teaching moment, and students are expected to try and find a cure with the skills that match their Court. Novices and youngbloods alike are encouraged to try and help lift the curse from anyone they can. (Get creative! Blood heals many wounds...) Any victims that have progressed too far will need to be seen to by Revar.

The nightmare curse, however, can spread quickly. Anyone who enters the nightmare of a victim will fall victim to the curse. Additionally, any attempt to reach out to the mind of a curse victim will also spread the curse. With the combined efforts of the students and teachers, the curse can be completely put out. But it will take time and care to ensure everyone is found in time, and cured safely.

ANYWAY, WINTER GAMES!

But a few curses aren't going to stop the Blue Court from making sure everyone has a good time. The days might be short, and weighed down by the threats of nightmares, but winter has hit Castle Courtsheart in full force, and the long nights and snow-covered grounds make for an excellent backdrop to the Inter-Court Winter Games!

There isn't really a reward for the winning house besides bragging rights and maybe a trophy that doubles as a chalice, but youngbloods and novices alike are invited to join in the festivities and compete against one another in the spirit of glory and the chance to lord over your Court's superiority. Even Council members and mature vampires of each court seem to enjoy cheering on their respective teams from the stands. Everything is fine! Forget your troubles and go play in the snow.

What kind of sports do vampires play? Feel free to get creative, but here are some examples:

Thrall-Curling: Since vampiric strength proves to be a little too much for this sport otherwise, teams of novices (or youngbloods) of the same Court can team up to gently compel their thralls to play the thrilling sport of curling. Coax that stone across the ice with care, and take out the opposing team! Or, well, the thralls will do that, assuming they're guided well. Try not to break them. (The thralls, that is.)

Figure skating: Practicing your pirouettes? For a vampire, a quadruple-axel is hardly worth breaking a sweat over. Favored for its beauty and almost seductive grace, the figure skating competition will be scored and judged by a multi-court panel. Participants might get extra points for incorporating bladework and masking into their sets, so these performances are sure to wow the judges.

Ice Hockey: Yes, the high-contact sport transcends time and space, but vampires don't need silly things like helmets or padded safety gear. Don your court's colors and hit the ice to toss the puck around and score as many points against the opposing team as you can before the time runs out. Violence is encouraged! Everyone likes to see a bit of blood on the ice this time of year. (Shadowstepping is considered cheating, but only if you get caught.)

And more! Snowball fighting may not be a sport, but there's no better time to enjoy the outdoors and stretch those growing fangs and muscles than the dead of winter. So whether you're cheering on your Court or watching from the sidelines, there's something here for everyone. Just because the castle is full of the the undead doesn't mean they can't have a little winter fun.

CLASS NOTES

Other notable happenings for the early winter season include:

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and maybe it's time to find or make gifts for that special blood claim in your life. This season blood jewelry is the hot ticket item. These are pieces made from precious metal and glass, which hold the blood of a vampire in them. Carry a lover's blood to show how much you love them, or carry your own to force down the throat of your enemies so you can influence them.

Whispers around school start to say that Black Court lost a novice this month. Not murder this time! He simply unmade himself trying to mistwalk. Eh, these things happen.

As a result of a tie in last month's pumpkin carving contest, members of the Black and Red Courts will find small packages outside their doors. They are gifted silver letter openers, with the handle inlaid with pumpkins and leaves, and a note from Revar with a little drawing of a pumpkin and their signature. How nice!

Lady Whisperfangs is quiet for now, but her time is yet to come... This month's check-in will have a field to submit gossip about your characters! Vampires do so love their drama.

[ It's strange, to receive sympathy for this. He so rarely talks about it--although, it seems like he's talking about it more and more these days. Maybe in some ways, that was its own punishment. If he never talked about what happened, he'd never receive sympathy. If he never talked about what happened, he could continue to punish and blame himself. ]

It's fine, really. It's--I mean, I'm the one in your dream.

[ Intruding, on this sacred place. He wants to tell him they don't need to make this about him. But he can see how badly Bones needs this. Connection. The very thing Edgin had been denying himself for the last ten years.

Well.

At least, until Kirk had showed up into his life. That wasn't something he'd ever intended or expected.

Some days, he regrets having told him. Other days, he's glad he finally did. ]

Yeah, she was...she was 11.

[ His voice catches. Too young. She'd never see thirteen or fourteen. She'd never grow up and become a young woman. He'd never walk her down the aisle or complain at her about whether she's going to have children. Never see her smile again, never-- ]

She was a good kid. I'd say the best kid, but [ he laughs, looking over at Joanna ] I'm sure you feel the same way about yours.

They're untested cause you ain't tested 'em yet! Did you try it on yourself before you pulled that little stunt? 'Cause you sure seemed surprised to see it work.

[ Bones will certainly look at her diagrams once he's less pissed. Right now he takes it and folds it under his arm for later. This is about proper medical practices, missy! And if his accent's a little thicker cause he's mad, it's cause he's mad. ]

Calculations aren't worth bunk if you're puttin' someone else's life at risk! Plus, this is about followin' the rules and working in my infirmary. If I tell you to restrain somebody, you restrain 'em. If I tell you to administer a shot of silver blood into somebody, you do it, and you don't ask questions.

[ He takes her notebook out, glaces at it, then closes it again. He sighs, gripping the bridge of his nose. ]

Look, I get that you're tryin' to be helpful. And it worked out, I'm not denyin' that. But you gotta be strategic about how you react to a crisis. This ain't the time to be pullin' out new tricks or pulling any maverick hogwash. When there's this many people who're sick and injured, we owe it to every person here to keep things running smoothly. And that means any new procedures have to get vetoed and approved before we can start using 'em on new patients. Understand?

[ He knows he should let go, but he can't. He just pulls him tighter, closer, his hold getting more intense. Each movement he takes twisted by the nightmare and turned into something that could hurt Kirk.

Maybe that was a fitting metaphor for what they were doing to each other. ]

[ Reyson hmphs, a little self-conscious and a little more thrilled. Fine, you've caught him out, you ridiculous jackass, he likes your cock, and feels downright fluttery over being seduced into an ambitious second round already. ]

Thanks for the warning, but I can handle some intensity.

[ See: Attitudes about challenges. His hand is tingling, pleasantly, but it's certainly nothing that will throw him! He rises up, reaches behind himself, and makes his body relax enough so he can sink in. There's only so much of Reyson that can be visible at one time, but this is not exactly being graded. Anything that doesn't come across this time, he'll just... teach Eden's body how it works, personally. Later. ]

It'd be gentler to start with one finger, but I, haaaa-ah, I like the stretch.

[ And he has slender fingers to start with. He gives the beast another lingering glance. He's mostly looking at Eden's face, but there is plenty to look at from where he is. Ah, having someone look at him like this is so exciting, it feels like his insides are on fire - on fire in a pleasant way, a kind of warmth that makes his outside shiver from the sheer contrast.

That might be the oil, actually, but Reyson is a sensitive soul and would prefer it to be from the poignant connection between two people in the midst of artistic passion. ]

[ This is only one victim though and, like they'd said, their job was to stabilize anyone before it got too late. They'd be needed throughout the Castle for the foreseeable future. ]

No, I don't think that would be a problem. Any of the thralls should be able to help you with that.

[ Bones shakes his head. He knows the dream thing isn't Edgin's fault. He can't blame him for that -- and besides, Edgin has been nice enough not to be weird about it. There's plenty of vampires out there who'd tell you that you shouldn't give a shit about the humans you left behind when you became undying.

It's the reason Bones wouldn't talk about his daughter otherwise, really. Much as he wants to deny any kind of attachment, Bones has his job and he has his family and that's it. Well, he doesn't even have his family, really, but that's the reason he's so invested in medicine for treating thralls. That kind of medicine might help humans, too.

But Bones can believe that his daughter has a future. Even if he doesn't see it, he can sleep during the day knowing that she's out there. Edgin, though... honestly, it's a wonder he's even still standing. The day Joanna dies, Leonard is sure his heart'll die with her.

What can he even say to that? He sets a hand on Edgin's shoulder. He barely knows the man, but it's all he can do. No one can ease a wound like that. ]

Can't argue with that. [ He smiles sadly, more to play along with Edgin's obvious attempt. ] I might've made a lot of mistakes in my life, but she ain't one of 'em.

[Upon hearing those words, he rests his head against Edgin's, almost peacefully despite the hiccuped pain and shuddering body. He was in agony but he accepted it because he was with Edgin, in his mind he was safe even if he was dying.

In honesty, the pain was so exquisite that he forgot he was even in a nightmare. If he were to die at Edgin's hands then so be it.]

I've done a good amount on myself, but never on a youngblood.

[ And while a lot of the points, not that particular one on someone thrashing. The rules change a bit on a few things when going from novice to youngblood. She also holds her tongue about the fact that she didn't ask questions, but actual restraint, as she calculated, wasn't possible for her. But the doctor was worried about all the ways it could've gone wrong, and wanted to make sure something didn't in the future. ]

... To be fair on me a little? I asked Revar about these things and if it'd be a problem to have the needles made to work on. With the curse happening, they've said I won't know until I actually do so, and the needles wouldn't be a problem either. Which was all in regards to using on the victims of the curse.

[ There's a page of cures that she was working on with novices that involved psychoactive ingredients that could be dangerous at a different dose than what's written. More things that she asked to have looked over (as some of the ingredients were exotic to her, despite knowing it was all right,) had the response of not having her hand held and to act. ]

But I understand your anger and I'll stick to only what you say, Doctor McCoy.

[ This is vital information because they are two little silver guys who love medicine and caring for thralls, so this is perfect. BRING THE HOT GOSS!!!

Leonard is just about wrapped up with putting away his tools when Elias speaks up. ]

Ugh. That kid?

[ You can hear the eyeroll in his voice, even as he buckles his bag and tosses a last cursory glance around the lab. Look... Kirk is actually a nice boy, in Leonard's opinion. But he's also got an ego and an attitude, which means he must never know. ]

He's a pain in the ass is what he is. You seriously telling me he has several courts chasin' his tail? Why? Kid can't even sit still through one of my lectures, can't imagine why they'd want 'im.

[ She doesn't know if there's supposed to be a special thing to call one's Maker's Maker, but this wasn't the time to have that kind of question. She'll probably ask it as a bit of levity when talking with Karma at another point. For now, there's silver and gold needles to have made and various tonics to put together and try. At least it's with sound enough logic, and not completely careless! ]

[ Eden would be glad to know that such a comment already got Reyson interested in multiple rounds. Also, look, there's only so much to be seen, but this was a great excuse to just reach over and gather some of the golden hair.

In reality, there's something about watching someone prep themselves like this that really made Eden want them. The hunger and desire is more than apparent in those slate blue eyes and a single bead of interest sliding from the tip of his head with each slow stroke. Eden probably didn't even need to touch themselves too much with a show like this. ]

Then it's good you're looking forward to a stretch. How many fingers do you think you need to work up to?

[ But if Reyson likes the stretch and has any kind of impatience (like Eden did with their first time,) how many fingers should be used to open someone up isn't exactly what people are able to wait around for. Especially if the way that Eden definitely licked their lip did anything to spur on eagerness. ]

[With a slow nod, Cotton seems to consider those words. She closes her eyes and brings a finger to her chin, before eventually gaining a small smile.]

But where I lived, there were only so many ways to have a keepsake of another; often times dear, that keepsake would be a lock of braided hair, woven carefully in memory. If you would like, I can see about doing this for you. It isn't much...and it won't be the same as allowing them a proper burial I fear, but...

[She could perhaps have said more about how much she intends to get her best from this opportunity, but she feels it better to focus on watching Xenk's own move. With a second roll of 17- ~~She better hope the die don't build for a spectacular failure~~- she's certainly feeling as if she's brimming with confidence. The woman carefully focuses on her next move as the turn comes to her, eyes honing in on what might be closer.

The target? Or Xenk's own stone?

(The charity is appreciated of course, but she can't insult it by not giving her all after all!)]

[ It makes Bones smile and Lockwood laugh. An actual laugh of delight, not a carefully practiced political laugh. Yes, there was a difference. ]

Brilliant! [ He exclaimed, before neatly maneuvering them through a bit of a crush at the side of the dance floor. Grinning proudly, which probably looked weird on his all too young face, he did execute a sassy spin before continuing. ] I should be coming to you for lessons in the art of how to cleverly bribe our Council.

[ Taken out of context the words could be horribly patronizing. It is all about tone and facial expressions, both of which convey a hint of conspiratorial pride and genuine admiration. Bones might present as a prickly jerk who was too principled to be successful at manipulating the system, but this was where Lockwood liked to think he knew better.

The grumpy doctor was a shrewd operative, when he was motivated, and medicine always seemed to motivate him. ] I suspect you've got a young blood, or perhaps even two, in your circle who could benefit from your mentorship in that department.

[ We don't judge virgins in this house, where Eden was one until a little over a month ago. ]

We can have that conversation another day, or you can just help yourself into my room when there's a ribbon tied on the doorknob to the hall. It's when I do my soaks.

[ See, soaks were nice and relaxing, and probably an easier way to go into all of this than the way Eden jumped into it all. ]

I did not say that classes were more important. There's a lot more than just that to get through to graduating, and we've all been working on ourselves outside of class because we need to for both class and graduating. Hesitation and holding back too much could cost you a lot more than you'll want to lose. You need to find your standing so you can thrive.

[ The classes are important as well, but there's a lot of introspection here. ]

[ There's a lot of days Edgin wonders how he's still around, too. He always tried to have an image of being all put together (you can take the man out of the con, but you can't necessarily take the con out of the man), but he'd spent plenty of nights getting drunk himself. He's been more mellow the last couple years, numb to the pain and tired of waking up having fallen asleep on the floor, but the pain never really goes away.

He mirrors Bones's sad smile when he pats him on the shoulder. What a touching, manly moment. Just two men, one patting the other on the shoulder in a true showing of masculine solidarity. ]

[ Edgin sighs, knowing he's about to overstep his place but committing to it anyway ]

I know I don't have any right to tell you how to live your life, but I think....you should try to see her. I think she'd want to see you. I can't imagine Kira having to grow up without one of her parents.

[ At least, he couldn't imagine it, but that'll be changing with that nightmare he shares with Xenk. ]

[ Yeah bro that's how bros are, six feet apart not looking down past the eyeline, just bros being bros (false.) ]

Yes, the threat of death is ever-looming... in all honesty, I would say 'I don't know how everyone does it,' but I imagine they simply move forward as best they can. It avails us not to dwell on that which lies outside of our power.

[ That's what happens when your god is the manifestation of swordplay, you gotta get fit to stay in their good graces! Still, talk of his Court brings warmth to Wyll's cheeks. Red Court is... well. ]

Your concern is appreciated, my friend. I have... somewhat thankfully avoided the notice of some of their wilder members thus far, but we shall see how things progress. At the very least, it is the court of blades -- I cannot help but be grateful for that. I know it is no mere coincidence.

[ The Blade is watching and the Blade knows he can do it! ]

[ Just two sad dads who understand each other deeply. Nothing homoerotic about that. Bones looks straight into Edgin's blue eyes, his own silver reflected back at him. Something about that look tells him they have a lot more than just daughters in common.

Normally, Bones would take that suggestion and tell him where to shove it. Really, if it were anyone else, he'd be so aghast that he'd shove the man away and tell him to fuck off.

But Edgin is clearly speaking from experience. And his daughter's gone for good -- Bones has never thought of himself as lucky, but he feels damn blessed when compared to the grief Edgin's surely gone through. Still, it's not exactly easy to admit some guy who's in your dreams is right.

Leonard looks away, chest tight with every little thing he's always wanted to tell his daughter, and every little fear he's had of her rejecting him. ]

I know.

[ He sighs. It's so easy to talk to Edgin? It hurts like hell to say it, but he knows it's true. Still, serious conversations like these suck the energy right out of him, so he has to follow it up with something. ]

Pretty much guaranteed I ain't gonna live up to whatever she thinks of me, but... It'll be a helluva surprise when she finds out her dad's a bloodsucker.

[ These two can fit so much self-loathing. ]

This ain't about bein' fair, Woods! I don't care if the Founders themselves showed up outta the ether and told you you were gonna save the world with your damn needles.

[ Bones continues to look unimpressed, crossing his arms in anger. He knows Revar, and he's sure they're probably sleeping even less than he is with all these people getting cursed and sick this month, so he's not going to push the point. ]

Good. When you're working in a medical situation, you gotta listen to your superiors. Hell, in most situations, you gotta listen to your superiors. They're the ones who've had the experience, and they're the ones whose asses will be on the line if shit goes wrong.

[ He drags a hand down his face. He doesn't actually like scolding novices, he was one only so many years ago. So he sighs. ]

It's about the time and place, alright? The lesson here is "don't go sneaking in unpracticed methods into a crisis situation." We've got enough people screaming and clawing here that the Blue Court are probably thinkin' we're stealing their act. So let's fucking focus on saving lives and doing our jobs.

[ It pays to have an ear to the ground... or to get your nose involved in other people's business, really. Xenk may act holier-than-thou around novices, but the youngbloods of the castle know he's just a little weird. Clever, smart, and very, very odd. Being raised by an evil vampire will do that to a man.

But it does bring with it a deep understanding of their rules and culture. And he knows in his heart he's right, so there's simply no dissuading him. ]

To be perfectly honest, [ and Xenk always is, ] he does not seem interested in the Blue Court. It is a poor fit for him. Revelry is but a persona for James; the carefree boy who sleeps through his classes is but a facade. I do not know if he has achieved mastery of his mask, but it would surprise me not if he were unskilled in this as well. He hides his true self behind charming wiles and superficial friendships, but the truth of him is deeper than this.

[ He's not gonna spill all of James' secrets (Xenk really barely knows any of them,) but he knows this much for sure. ]

It is truly only his maker that keeps him in the Blue Court. I fear the human desire to... maintain attachments is to his detriment. He will never reach his full potential in a court that rewards his false self.

[ If Lockwood decides he wants to ferret out more about Kirk's secrets, he'll do the legwork himself. A fact that someone who knows him as well as Xenk does will understand.

For the time being Lockwood is quiet and listens, speaking only after Xenk falls silent and the pregnant pause between them reaches full term. ]

Are you certain that the only thing holding him to Blue is his attachment to his maker? [ His tone is thoughtful. ] Your choice of words in this situation, it sounds as if your Kirk may also be attached to his own façade.

Regardless if he attains the ability to mask, as we know it; it sounds as if he's maintaining a very carefully crafted armor.

Yes, sir. It's because it falls to you in the end that I said I understood your anger.

[ She really struggled the most with how conflicting all of her elders can be. Either trying, because you won't know otherwise, or not trying. While it won't help saying it aloud, Eden knew that her choice was the fastest. Her brain kept saying that these were the fastest and least traumatic ways of handling things, with the limitations of a novice at play. It's just such an unknown thing to everyone, so she also can't blame the Doctor for being upset. He should be, and with how exhausting everything has been, he didn't need to worry about some novice potentially ignoring orders.

He was really stressed and tired, probably. While Eden and other people's efforts have mitigated the curse's spreading from exponentially getting worse, you can't exactly stop everything in its tracks right away. There were still plenty of people being brought in for screaming their lungs and blood out. Her treatments worked on novices, but for youngbloods... She was hesitant to play around with the ratios and dosing.

Time and place, though... ]

So... Your point is clear. I'm guessing I should just return to first response instead?

Oh, yeah. You know me, I'm a real brown-nose.

[ He rolls his eyes, but it's met with a smirk on his face. It is nice to be acknowledged for being smart and playing his court, Leonard must admit. Revar really is a nice enough person, they're not too difficult to schmooze. And it eases a lot of Bones' concerns, that he can do his own thing in the castle and keep up his research still. (Lockwood has him completely pegged.)
